Clive Hartley is a full-time professional wine educator and Senior Head Teacher responsible for the Sydney Wine Academy (SWA) at TAFENSW Ryde Campus in Sydney.
Prior to coming to Australia Clive ran successful winebars and a wholesale wine outlet in London as well as owning his own small restaurant.
Since arriving in Australia in 1989 Clive has written for a number of magazines and journals. Currently he has a regular column -‘Wine Tutor’ in Australia’s National Winestate Magazine.
Clive is the author of the Australian Wine Guide first published in 1999. This 272 page full colour book is an introductory book on the world of wine aimed at the wine professional and enthusiast. The 6th edition was released in early 2017 as an ebook and is available on itunes, KOBO and Google. The book covers Australian as well as International wine regions. He is a regular panel judge with Drinks Trade Magazine and Winestate Magazine, as well as judging in a number of wine shows across Australia and internationally.
Clive has specialised in Australian, Italian and French wines, educating all sectors of the industry including: wholesalers, retailers, sommeliers and consumers. In the past 20 years he has visited most Australian wine regions as well as USA, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Greece and numerous visits to Italy and France.
The Sydney Wine Academy is the largest wine educators in Sydney and offer WSET course from Foundation to Diploma level. It also specialise in Sommelier training having run Australia’s only Sommelier Course for over 10 years. The Sydney Wine Academy has approximately 500 wine students per annum. In 2010 the Sydney Wine Academy won the Riedel Trophy being names as the WSET International Educator of the Year. For his services in the early years of Sommeliers in Australia he was awarded Life Membership of the Australian Sommeliers Association.
Clive has also acted as consultant for retail stores, restaurants and has imported wines from both France and Italy. For a number of years we was a guest Sommelier at Bells at Killcare Restaurant with Italian chef Stefano Manfredi.
In 2016 the Greek wine industry body NIOVWG (EDOAO) invited Clive to Greece to tour the major regions and sit for the World of Greek Wine Program level 3 in Athens under the guidance of Konstantinos Lazarakis MW to enable the establishment of Greek Wine courses in Australia. Subsequently Clive became the first non-Greek wine educator to run Greek courses in Sydney offering level 1 and Level 2 courses.

Clive holds a Bachelor of Education (Technical) from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) as well as a Diploma of Teaching, Originally qualified through the Hotel Catering & Institutional Management Association ( HCIMA Part B examination – UK), and holds the Diploma in Wines and Spirits (WSET London)
2018 Clive was instrumental in opening the new wine facility at the Sydney Wine Academy Ryde which features a unique Wine Sensory Centre for training in the art of tasting.
