Best Wine Student
In recognition of excellence in wine studies by a current student, studying at tertiary level.
This award acknowledges an individuals’ high achievement in their studies, demonstrating exceptional research skills, thorough understanding of their wine topic and ability to communicate their findings in an outstanding piece of written work.
Entry criteria
- Open to an individual living in Australia and currently enrolled in a recognised Australian wine education course at University, TAFE or independent college (Studying at Level 4, Diploma or Degree and above).
- Entries must be submitted with an academic transcript showing results in all wine related subjects that have been undertaken in the past three years from July 2022 to July 2025. The transcript may include subjects which are unrelated to wine, but only the wine-related subjects will be considered for the purposes of judging this award.
- Entries must be supported by a research paper, project or assignment that has been conducted during the course of their studies (presented in a paper, verbal or project format).
- The research paper, project or assignment must be the sole work of the award entrant only. Group projects should not be submitted.
- The research paper, project or assignment needs to have been submitted in the English language for academic assessment between 1 July 2024 and 31 July 2025.
- If assessment has been completed, please provide the final grade and marker’s commentary.
Entry Fee:
No entry fee applies to award nomination submissions for this category.
Judging criteria:
- Excellence in academic results, as evidenced by the applicant’s graded results in wine related subjects over the past three years.
- However, applicants whose grades in wine related subjects have shown great improvement over the years will also be considered worthy. So, an applicant does not need to have achieved excellence in every wine subject, but shown that they have improved and are now achieving excellence in recent subjects.
- The sample piece of their work (research paper, project or assignment) submitted will be considered with the following in mind:
- Technical skill of the writer – accurate grammar, good sentence construction, appropriate document structure, good flow of language and correct citation methods used;
- Relevance of content to the wine industry or wine topics
- Demonstrated strong understanding of the topic
- Students who have a passion for wine and wine related subjects and are willing contributors to their education community and help others with their studies will be viewed favourably.
Prize:
The winner will receive: a $500.00 cash contribution towards academic study, one year’s concessional membership to WCA valued at $140 (or 1 free renewal for an existing member), a category trophy, and exclusive WCA 2025 award-winner print and web graphics to use in personal marketing and communications.
