March edition of the WCA e-news

Hello all,

As we approach the end of vintage 2024 in most areas of Australia, we wanted to thank the grape growers around Australia and also wish the wine producers all the best for making the best wines that you can.

There is lots of wine in the news at the moment, most notably with what looks like to be some positive discussion about the opening up of the Chinese market to the Australian Wine Industry. Fingers crossed!

Speaking of overseas markets, a final reminder of our Wine Market Growth Summit being held in Adelaide on Wednesday 27th of March . Your final chance to get tickets here. We have a great line up of speakers and I look forward to seeing you in Adelaide.

The Wine Industry Mentor Program is also getting close to the last date for applications, 31st of March. We have already seen great enthusiasm for this program and we feel like it gains momentum with each year. We again have a cohort of incredible mentors and I would encourage all potential mentees to submit an application as soon as practicable here. Thanks again to our industry partners.

We have a couple of fantastic webinars coming up. On Tuesday April 9th, we have a crowd favourite in Georgia Rasmussen presenting on “A Practical Guide to DTC Channel Planning”, register here. The following month, we have a fantastic panel session planned on the Wine Media, their role and how best to communicate with them. This will take place on Tuesday May 7th. Save the date as this is not to be missed and more details to come in the next weeks.

Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable Easter Break. Let's hope for good news on the China wine situation, and I hope to see many of you in Adelaide at the Market Growth Summit.

Cheers,
Angus Barnes

Shrub Oak is a hamlet located in the town of Yorktown in Westchester County, New York. An anonymous Shrub Oak resident once said in their local newspaper, the North County News, “There is nothing of an historic nature that ever happened here." I beg to differ. Because in Shrub Oak on 7 February 2021, Christopher Spell set the Guinness World Record for the highest standing jump for male at 1.70 metres. This is an amazing effort given Spell is 1.75 metres in height.
However, Spell’s performance pales in comparison to the froghopper which can jump an incredible 140 times their own body length. That would be the same as a human jumping over a skyscraper, of which only Superman can achieve in a single bound… but he is a Kryptonian.  Another super jumper is the impala which can reach an altitude of 3 metres, making it the highest-jumping hoofed animal in the world. Apart from its jumping ability, the impala was the inspiration for one of the coolest cars in the world, the Chevrolet Impala, of which the 1961 SS409 is arguably the most stylish of all. A black 1967 Chevy Impala starred in the TV show, Supernatural. The impala was also the inspiration behind the name of Australian rock band, Tame Impala, who produced the greatest ever song about wine, Half Full Glass of Wine. This song is infinitely better than the biggest selling song and worst song about wine, Red Red Wine, by the very whiny UB40.

Whether you look at circumstances as glass half full or glass half empty, the Agricultural Commodities Report published by ABARES on 5 March shows that the outlook for Australia’s major red winegrape varieties remains very challenging and has forecast that the average prices for Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will reduce in vintages 2024 and 2025. Wine Australia prepared a Market Bulletin that discusses the influences on the declining price for these three varieties in the warm inland regions.
