WCA Update April 2023

Our late vintage is drawing to a close and we hope that some wonderful wines come out of what were challenging conditions in many parts of Australia.

In these sorts of times, it’s critical that wine brands communicate effectively with their audiences, which is naturally something that we at WCA are passionate about. One key element of communication is of course the packaging, which is often the first point of interaction consumers have with many brands. We recently held a webinar featuring the wonderful Rowena Curlewis of Denomination on how to ensure your labels tell your brand story.

A second part is understanding what is going on in the market, which will be the topic of our May webinar, presented by Wine Australia, which will look at trends in key markets post the pandemic.

WCA members can rewatch past webinars for free, while non-members can access the recordings via our paywall. One of the many benefits of WCA membership is free access to an outstanding series of thought-provoking webinars; you only have to watch two to effectively get the value of an individual membership back, so it’s well worth it. Find out more here.

The final part of the FY23 series in building brand advocacy is our upcoming Direct to Consumer Wine Summit on the 21st of June. This is being held in Sydney and coincides with the Good Food and Wine Show and the Barossa Auction, so a must-visit time in the wine industry diary. Click here for more information on what will be a compelling day.

Finally, a huge thank you to our WCA intern, Abbey Hants, who has been doing a fantastic job helping out Prue and the team behind the scenes. In coming weeks Abbey will complete her Masters of Business Administration (Wine Business) at the University of Adelaide and will be heading to Melbourne to take up the next exciting phase of her career. All the very best Abbey – we look forward to hearing who has been lucky enough to get you on board!

Good luck with closing out vintage. We look forward to seeing you at one of our events soon.

Cheers,

Andrew Stark 🍷
WCA Executive Officer

Bailey's Snippet - Wine Australia

According to Metacritic, Rob Schneider is the worst critically rated actor in Hollywood history with an average career rating of 35 out of 100. In the 25 films he has appeared in, only one has received a positive rating, with nine mixed reviews and 15 bad reviews. Renowned film critic Roger Ebert eloquently summarised the quality of Rob’s films when in response to the 2005 sequel to Deuce Bigalow (European Gigolo), he quipped, "Mr. Schneider, your movie sucks". This poor track record has not stopped comedy legend, John Cleese, from working with Rob on a script for a new movie called the Great Emu War, based on the true story of the battles between emus and farmers in Western Australia in the 1930s.  For those who doubt the power of Artificial Intelligence, ChatGTP ranks the Great Emu War as the third biggest rivalry in the history of the world, just behind the Cold War and Hundred Years’ War. It was even ranked ahead of Arsenal v Tottenham, Norwood v Port Adelaide, Borg v McEnroe, Ali v Frazier, Australia v England (The Ashes) and The Beatles v Stones. There is nothing like a great rivalry to launch fiery debates out of seemingly mundane subjects. For example, one of the more heated discussions you can have is on the relative merits of watermelons v rockmelons. Whatever your views, the statistics don’t lie. According to Hort Innovation, Australian exports of rockmelon in 2022 totalled $21 million compared to $7 million for watermelon. I rest my case.
The latest Australian wine export figures released by Wine Australia show that value of exports declined 7 per cent in value to $1.90 billion and 1 per cent in volume to 620 million litres. These export results are representative of the incredibly tough conditions for Australian wine globally. Economic hardship, increased competition from other beverages, and health and wellness trends are impacting traditional markets for Australian wine.
