WCA Update May 2023

As it is with the wine community as a whole, the next few months will be very eventful for WCA, in the best possible way of course.

Last night we had a networking drinks event in Sydney run by our NSW Chapter, with SA and VIC soon to have their chance. These events are a great opportunity to catch up with fellow members of our community and I certainly encourage anyone who can to come along – they’re always great evenings. While on the topic, we’re looking for a few new members for our Victorian Chapter, with some of our past wonderful contributors moving interstate or overseas. There’s a link below to get in touch – it’s an excellent chance both to build your own network but also to help shape the way we talk about wine.

As you already know, June sees us hosting the Direct to Consumer Wine Summit in Sydney. It’s a brilliant list of speakers who will imparting a broad range of tips on everything from strategy to the tech stack considerations, so if D2C is important to your business (and it should be), come along. It’s just before the Good Food and Wine Show, so people can get the most out of their trip to Sydney. Click here for more information.

Before that, we have HR Director of the Year – Pernod Ricard’s Christian Campanella – joining us on a must-hear webinar on getting the most out of your teams. When times are a bit challenging, keeping teams motivated and focused is one of our biggest leadership challenges, so I’m very much looking forward to hearing Christian’s thoughts on how we can achieve this. Click here to register.

To round out the events side of things, ticketing for the always-popular Royal Wine Show lunches in Sydney (18th August) and Adelaide (6th October) are now available. Click here for more information.

Finally, I’m pleased to share the latest piece from this year’s media cadet, Tijana Laganin. TJ’s created some beautiful pieces on a variety of wine topics this year; her piece on Langhorne Creek’s Grapes for Good is well worth a read. Click here to see the article.

We hope that the ’23 ferments are progressing well. We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event soon.

Cheers,

Andrew Stark 🍷

Bailey's Snippet - Wine Australia

Ian Dury and the Blockheads were one of the most unique bands of the 1970s punk and new wave era. Their eclectic sound was drawn from their many musical influences including funk, jazz, rock and roll, soul, and reggae. And Ian Dury's lyrics were a rare combination of lyrical poetry, word play, sharp observation of British everyday life, and scatological humour. One of their biggest hits was “Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3”. Reasons to be cheerful can be traced back to Democritus (460 BC to 370 BC), also known as the “Laughing Philosopher”. He wrote a book back in the day called On Cheerfulness that highlighted the importance of “possessing a happy spirit” or “being cheerful”. Democritus was also big on atoms. He once said, no doubt after having a good old belly laugh, “Nothing exists except atoms and space, everything else is opinion.”
The opinions of consumers and the trade (importers, distributors, retailers, on-premise) in the United States are reported in  the first round of findings from a four-year research project that respected US-based market researcher Wine Opinions has delivered with funding from  Wine Australia. The project is aiming to help identify opportunities for Australian wine in the US, particularly since the significant changes to consumer behaviour since COVID-19
