WCA Update March 2023

Despite ‘interesting’ weather in many parts of Australia, vintage is well underway and almost done in some regions. We at WCA hope that it’s going well for all of you.

As the first quarter draws to a close, there’s also plenty going on at WCA. We hope you all enjoyed our recent webinar from Georgia Rasmussen on direct to consumer benchmarking; for those that missed it, you can always catch up on previous webinars through the WCA website here. Keep an eye out on the website or our socials for the next webinar which will focus on packaging innovation and sustainability.

Continuing on the theme of building your D2C businesses, planning is well underway for WCA’s Direct to Consumer Summit in Sydney on the 21st of June – save the date! We have a compelling group of experts across tourism, customer experience, technology, and communications to help you grow this critical part of your business.

Another set of important dates to save are the always-popular Royal Wine Show lunches in Sydney and Adelaide. Click here for more details and we look forward to seeing many of you at one of the events.

Also, a quick reminder that we’re nearing the end of the application period for the world-class Wine Industry Mentor Program. This is an unrivalled opportunity for those early in their wine journey to learn invaluable knowledge from some of our community’s true leaders. Click here to register your interest.

Finally, we have a few movements in the WCA board to mention. Along with long-serving and outstanding Treasurer Angus Barnes last year, the wonderful Justine Henschke has begun maternity leave – we all wish you the best and look forward to the baby pics soon! This means we have a vacancy on the Board for someone with financial skills to take on the role of Treasurer. We’d love to hear from any of you who would like to take on a great opportunity to be part of our experienced and collegiate Board. Please contact me on exec@winecommunicators.com.au to express interest.

Good luck again with the close of vintage and see you soon.

Cheers,

Andrew Stark 🍷
WCA Executive Officer

Bailey's Snippet - Wine Australia

In South Australia, Mad March refers to a busy period for entertainment around the state with a range of major events occurring in the month, such as the Festival of Arts, the Fringe Festival, WOMADelaide, and the Adelaide Cup. However, in the United States, March Madness refers to that time of year when the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) college basketball tournament is held. It is a single-elimination tournament that features 68 teams vying to survive three weekends of games to be crowned the national champions. Only 16 teams (the "Sweet Sixteen") make it past the first weekend. The second weekend narrows the field first to the "Elite Eight" and then the "Final Four”. The final weekend focuses on the four semi-finalists. The two semi-final victors move on to play in the national championship game.

Wine Australia’s resident lawyer/sports stat guru, Ned Hewitson, has come up with an astonishing array of facts about the NCAA tournament. For example, in this year’s tournament, Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) became only the second 16th seed to beat a number one seed when they defeated Purdue in the first round. Ned highlighted the magnitude of FDU’s achievement by showing a picture comparing each team’s home court. As Michelangelo allegedly said one time, a picture tells a thousand words. Another statistic that Ned mentioned is that UCLA has won the most NCAA titles, although only one since 1975. What Ned didn’t mention is that Raymond Townsend Jr was a member of UCLA’s 1975 championship winning team. “Who is Raymond Townsend Jr?” I hear you ask. He was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 1978 NBA draft & became the first Filipino–American to play in the NBA. In 1976, his father Ray Townsend Sr was recognised as the oldest junior college basketball player in history at age 39.
The Philippines is one of ten markets in Southeast Asia where Australian wine is exported to. In 2022, Australian wine exports to Southeast Asia grew by 16 per cent in value to $305 million and 56 per cent in volume to 27 million litres. In light of this growth, and Vinexpo Asia taking place in Singapore in May 2023, Wine Australia will be releasing a two-part series examining the region, with part one looking at recent trends in the region as a whole. Part two will focus more closely on insights into key markets in the region.
