Welcome to the July edition of the WCA e-news
This is a hello again from me, Angus Barnes as I have assumed the role of Executive Chair of the WCA, as of the 1st of July 2023. I am delighted to be back on the board and executive team (some of you may know I was a previous Chair, Vice Chair and Treasurer, only stepping down in November of last year). I believe my role is to help the WCA as we transition to the next phase of our operations and to continue to the strategic directives of: Engage, Connect and Educate.
I wanted to thank post the outgoing Chair, Marni Cook as well as the outgoing Executive Officer, Andrew Stark. Both of whom have been outstanding leaders for the WCA and have been brilliant in handing over the reins in good order.
After a great finish to last year, highlighted by the successful and informative Direct to Consumer Summit in Sydney, we head into the busy season of Wine Shows and Wine Communicator Awards. On the 18th of August in Sydney, we will celebrate the wine industry and all things good at the WCA Sydney Royal Wine Show Trophy Winners Lunch. Then on to Adelaide on the 6th of October for the WCA Royal Adelaide Wine & Spirits Awards Lunch. Whilst I am bias, being the chair of the Sydney Royal Wine Show Committee, I implore you to join the hundreds of others in celebrating the great wines of Australia and the great wine people.
Before that, for those of you based in South Australia, don’t miss the event on the 3rd of August at Oliver’s Taranga Cellar Door. The event, Growing your brand through the Cellar Door, will see a panel of leading experts as they discuss connection, innovation and maximising your cellar door offering. It's only $25.00 a ticket for WCA members.
Lastly, a reminder that the famous annual WCA Wine Communicator Awards are on again this year. Entries are open now and close on the 1st of September 2023. These awards recognise outstanding contribution to, and excellence in, wine communication in all its forms. We encourage entries across all 10 categories.
I want to take this opportunity to welcome on board three new national directors of the WCA and thank them for assisting us:
- Sandy Hathaway from South Australia, who has also taken on the role as treasurer
- Liz Menzel from Western Australia
- James Hall from Victoria
Welcome all!
In closing, I welcome the new financial year. A year that will no doubt challenge the wine industry as can be seen by the recent announcement of the lowest volume vintage recorded in Australia this century. The board and the executive team are convinced that the WCA plays a vital role across the Australian Wine Industry, and we encourage our members to utilise the WCA to Engage, Connect and Educate.
Cheers,
Angus Barnes 🍷
