WCA Update February 2023

We’re almost in March and harvest is underway for parts of Australia and looming in the others. We at WCA hope it’s a successful one for everyone.

We’re back into our webinar programme and have a great programme lined up. Kicking us off last week was an excellent presentation on market trends by CGA by Nielsen; March sees direct to consumer expert Georgia Rasmussen go through benchmarking your D2C business performance, which is a must-view for any business looking to build performance in this critical channel. Find out more

Also, make sure you’ve got early June cleared for WCA’s upcoming Direct to Consumer Summit where an exciting line-up of speakers will be providing powerful insights into how to build your D2C business profitably.

Also, look out for registration for the 2023 intake of the Wine Industry Mentor Program, launching March 1. We’re extremely grateful to programme partners ASVO, University of Adelaide, Wine Australia, and WISA. Just as importantly, we’re grateful and humbled by the number of industry leaders who have put their hands up to participate as mentors; once again, we have an amazing group of experienced professionals willing to give up their time to assist giving talented newcomers to the industry an inside run.

All of WCA’s offers are available to members at attractive discounts, while the webinars are free for registered members, so if you’re attending more than one webinar and one of our many events, you’ll have paid for your membership. Click here to register for WCA membership today.

Last but by no means least, look out for the release of the much-anticipated The Australian Ark book by Andrew Caillard MW and Angus Hughson. This is an incredible work that encapsulates so much of the history of our wonderful industry. Pre-order your copy now, with great trade pricing available.

Good luck again to all for harvest and we look forward to seeing you at a WCA event soon.

Cheers,

Andrew Stark 🍷

Bailey's Snippet - Wine Australia

According to Guinness World Records, the longest place name in the world is the 168-letter, krungthepmahanakhonamonrattanakosinmahintharaayuthayamahadilokphopnoppharatratchathaniburiromudomratchaniwetmahasathanamonpimanawatansathitsakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit. If you are struggling to pronounce that then there is an official short version - the 111-letter krungthephphramahanakhon bowonratanakosin mahintharayuthaya mahadilokphiphobnovpharad radchataniburirom udomsantisug. So where is this place you may ask? It is the official name of Bangkok, capital city of Thailand.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bangkok was the most visited city in the world with 22.78 million visitors in 2019, just ahead of the least visited country, Tuvalu, with 3,700. Thailand is often referred to as “The Land of Smiles.” It got this nickname because in Thailand, a smile is much more than just a smile – there are at least 13 different smiles that a Thai person may use, each one having a very specific meaning. For example, fuoon yim, which is the stiff smile, also known as the “I should laugh at the joke even though it’s not funny” smile. I get fuoon yim-ed at regularly by Wine Australia colleagues.

The growth in Australian wine exports to Thailand gives the Australian wine community something to smile about in a very challenging trading environment.

In 2022, exports to Thailand more than doubled to $62 million, the biggest increase in value by any destination. However, the growth to Thailand and other Southeast Asian destinations was offset by declines to the United Kingdom, highlighted in the 2022 Export Report.
