Patrick’s career began in research positions with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Organisation (CSIRO). After a year traveling Europe with his wife Judith, Patrick obtained a position at Roseworthy Agricultural College and thus began his journey with wine. Patrick has been involved in teaching and research in the areas of grapes and wine for over 40 years. At Roseworthy Agricultural College (1976-1992) he lectured in a range of subject topics including wine chemistry, viticulture and sensory evaluation. When Roseworthy Agricultural College amalgamated with The University of Adelaide in the early 1990’s, he joined the Viticulture group in the new Department of Horticulture, Viticulture and Oenology as a Senior Lecturer in Viticulture. Although retired for some years now Patrick maintains an active involvement with the viticulture and oenology group at the Waite Campus of the University of Adelaide.
He and his wife, Judith, have for several years conducted a small business Patrick Iland Wine Promotions that focuses on writing and publishing educational wine books. Several of these books have won international awards and are used as student texts around the world.
Patrick and Judith enjoy travel and particularly to wine regions, both within Australia and overseas, where they have the opportunity to catch up with past students.
